With 2013 behind me, now it’s time to focus on the new year. Here are my New Year’s Resolutions for 2014.
1. Spend more time in the shop.
This goes without saying for the most part. Unfortunately, I currently spend a small fraction of time in the shop compared to the total time spent on other pen turning related activities.
[5-4-14] By exploring custom pen turning I’ve recently spent more time in the shop testing out various concepts and creating new pens. I hope to share some of my findings with you in the near future.
2. Learn how to use my camera and take quality photos of finished pens.
For some, taking photos seems to be second nature but for me it’s a real challenge. I plan to devote more time to learning the basic of good photos. I know this is an essential part of online marketing for pen sales, so it’s definitely worth the effort. I look forward to sharing my progress with you.
[5-4-14] No luck yet.
3. Learn how to create how-to videos and post them on YouTube.
Learning by video is probably the second best thing to hand-on learning for me. My oldest son (12) is interested in creating videos, although mainly for the Minecraft game; it’s a start. This will give us a good project to work together on.
[5-4-14] Nothing yet, other than some ideas for videos. Stay tuned.
4. Create kitless pen series.
I’m looking to expand my pen turning skills to include kitless pen designs. I’ll be posting my plans and progress along the way throughout the year. My first pen will be fountain pen design using deer antler. I also have plans for ballpoint designs using antler and corn cob.
[5-4-14] I completed my first kitless pen using deer antler. I decided to use the Schmidt Roller Righter rollerball system instead of a fountain nib. Below are photos of the finished pen.
