Fred Wissen Designs LLC is owned by Fred and Tina, with the help of two wonderful children, Brittany and Zachary.
Fred will be retiring from the Navy in December of 2013 after 28 years of service but we plan to remain in the area if at all possible.
Fred began woodworking as a hobby in 2004 making solid wood furniture for friends and family. He has also tackled larger projects remodeling his family home and built his woodworking workshop from the ground up to have enough space to store his tools and projects.
Fred first got into wood turning a few years ago when he attended a pen making class at the Norfolk Woodcraft. Since then, his wood turning hobby has expanded into handcrafted bowls, pendants, and many styles of pens. Tapping into his engineering background, Fred has also learned to custom design handcrafted molds to pour your own polyester resin and other casted pen blanks. He has been a member of International Association of Penturners (IAP) for a few years and is nicknamed PTownSubbie on their forum.
Trinidine Wissen, more affectionately called Tina by her friends, likes to design abstract polymer clay pens and blanks and has created a new version of polymer clay blanks that can be turned. She has been a freelance graphic designer since 1996 as well as designer of this site. Tina is a member of IAP – nicknamed MrsPTownSubbie.
We are focused on quality and proper grading of figure. You can rely on consistent wood that has the quality and figure you expect.
We carry some pen blank types not found anywhere else.
Welcome to Iowacobb Pen Turning Supplies, a division of Pleasantville Pensmithing, owned and operated by Tim McGill. We are located in Central Iowa, in the heart of USA. Iowa is known for growing corn and raising livestock, so it is only natural for corn cobs to be our specialty.
Tim is an experience pen turning and enjoys his time at the lathe as well as time spent helping others. His specialty is pens crafted from corn cobs and vintage barnwood. Growing up on a farm in Southern Iowa, Tim has long enjoyed nature’s beauty and working with his hands. Early woodworking experiences started in shop classes at school and continued in his Grandpa’s workshop. Many years later, in his own workshop, the art of woodworking continues.
Please feel free to contact me if you have any questions or would like more information.

Retired forest engineer –
I have been involved in pen making for more than twenty five (25) years. The past six (6) years was devoted to the production of pen blanks of natural fibers for the pen crafters trade.
Burl Cap blanks, Pine Cone blanks, Cigar bank blanks, Cholla Catus blanks, Recycled Mill Trimmings (RMT) blanks, Stabilized blanks, Natural blanks, Sweet Gum burl blanks.
Featuring wood turning supplies and wooden pen blanks from the Pacific Northwest.
I got into wood turning in 2006 after joining the local wood turning club. My first few projects were the typical bowls, goblets, etc. Then one day I decided I was going to make a pen, and I was hooked.
Fast forward to today where I currently own a tree farm. My primary product is lumber, but I like to go through and cherry pick some of the better pieces and save it for my wood turning projects.

I love dogs….I think that when I pass if there are no dogs where I go, it won’t be heaven.
Texas Blanks is a company I started when I started creating my own blanks for turning my own pens. Soon after that I decided to make my blanks for others to enjoy. All of my blanks are unique not only in the colors I choose but in the burl wood I choose to put in them. I stabilize all of my wood prior to casting using “Cactus Juice” which turns a normally worthless piece if wood usable again. I give my blanks the name “Reincarnated Wood” because I bring the wood back to life in my blanks.
Quality First, Quantity Second
I strive to give you the best possible product at the most reasonable pricing. I do no profit shipping and if you are not completely satisfied I will make it right even if it’s at my expense.
The Classic Nib came about when Dee and I decided to get off the road and stop doing art shows. We saw a need for an upscale nib for our component sets as Lou Metcalf better known as DC Bluesman and owner of Heritance nibs contacted me about trying to contact the Bock Nib company in Germany as he was parting ways with his supplier. He and I decided to partner in this endeavor and I sent him a check for my half of the business. Two weeks later Lou had a massive stroke. Dee and I decided to pursue this on our own and after months of negotiating Bock agreed to sell me nibs with the Bock Logo on them. Classic Nib was started with one product line Bock Nibs. Within a very short time we were being contacted by folks who were making blanks and wanted a place to sell them so our Vendor Partnership program was born. We wanted our own niche in the market place and decided to welcome Vendor Partners who wanted a higher end place to show and sell their products. We now have many product lines and hundreds of products and are adding product and Vendor Partners so fast that we had to build a completely new web store So if your looking for that unique blank, a component set made of solid Sterling Silver that is only available at Classic’s, the finest nib for your component set, or a vise that is the industry standard for drilling your blanks and many more products to make your pen turning experience he envy of others your at the right place, Classic Nib by Dee and Roy.
